Field Study for Students: How Is Air Quality Monitored?

06.06.2025

On May 21, 2025, first-year students of the Crisis Management undergraduate program participated in a field study as part of the course Air Protection, visiting the Zagreb 1 monitoring station – part of the national air quality monitoring network managed by the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ).

Under the professional guidance of DHMZ staff, the students learned about the operation of measuring devices and how concentrations of particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ground-level ozone (O₃) are monitored. They gained first-hand insight into the daily work involved in the air protection system and the importance of accurate and continuous measurements for preserving both the environment and human health – especially considering that, according to the World Health Organization, air pollution causes over seven million premature deaths worldwide each year.

This field study successfully bridged theoretical knowledge with practical experience and provided students with valuable insight into the real-world sector of environmental risk management.
