AdRIAtic-ionian Nature based solutioNs enhAncement – ARIANNA

Description

The ARIANNA Project is dedicated to reducing the risk of natural disasters—especially floods—by unlocking the untapped potential of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). Floods increasingly threaten the rich yet fragile ecosystems within the Programme area, and NBS offers a promising path forward. More than just conservation, NBS harnesses the “power of nature” to deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits while enhancing ecosystem resilience. Through this approach, the ARIANNA Project will develop:

  • Joint Transnational Strategy on Climate Resilience: An integrated framework featuring transnational guidelines and actions rooted in NBS, tested through specific pilot initiatives.
  • Transnational NBS Pilot Actions: A practical application of the Joint Strategy, comprising:
    • Lamination Tank Pilot: A set of interventions to maintain hydrological balance, enhancing infiltration and evapotranspiration while mitigating surface runoff and urban heat island effects.
    • Multi-Risk Vulnerability Tools and NBS Practices: Addressing the interplay of earthquake risk, urbanization, and flood defense infrastructure, these tools will support strategic planning in pilot sites.
    • Enhancing Firefighters’ Flood Response Capabilities: This pilot integrates training, specialized equipment, and coordination mechanisms for effective flood response.

The Pilots will be monitored, culminating in a Transnational Joint Position Paper as a strategic tool for integrating NBS into further disaster prevention frameworks.

  • ARIANNA NBS Network: A collaborative network fostered through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), bolstered by capacity-building activities to raise awareness of NBS. A Digital Knowledge Hub will serve as a resource repository and ongoing forum for sharing best practices, enhancing the transferability of project outcomes, and ensuring continuity.

ARIANNA is shaping a sustainable, resilient future by empowering nature to protect and thrive!

Partner Activities within the project Key activities of UASVG: participation in the development of a strategy aimed at increasing the resistance of the Adriatic-Ionian region to climate change and natural disasters; strengthening the competencies of stakeholders to respond to flood risks and increasing community awareness of resilience to climate change; participation in the implementation of pilot actions; and exchange of knowledge and experience among project stakeholders.
