Microbiology and Immunology
Lecture + Exercises + Seminar: 2 + 0 + 0
Course Aims: Microbiology principles as an aid to diagnosis, specimens required for diagnosis, characteristics of commonly found microorganisms; differences between bacteria, fungi and viruses. In this course students will learn how to demonstrate modes of transmission and the mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis and the outcomes of infection, including chronic microbial infections, how to describe a range of advanced laboratory techniques, including the purification of isolated microbial pathogens, review microbial growth cycles and perform analyses of their proteins and nucleic acids for downstream applications such as gene cloning and sequencing studies. They will also know how to describe infection control procedures, sterilization methods and issues of patient safety.
